How does Rent A Toll work?
Rent A Toll uses patent-pending technologies to facilitate transactions between car rental agencies and toll authorities. Through this technology, Rent A Toll is able to consolidate your fast lane transactions into one receipt.
Using Rent A Toll is similar to using any other car rental option. Simply decide to Opt-In (agree to the service) – it’s the same as choosing the gas option, navigation support, insurance.
There are three ways to opt in at car rental locations offering Rent A Toll:
 |
At point of rental car reservation
When making your reservation online, through your agent or at the counter, talk to the agent or send them a comment about adding Rent A Toll to your contract. |
 |
As part of your travel profile
Ask your rental agency or travel coordinator to add the Rent A Toll option to your profile. |
 |
On demand – If you have not opted in before renting or at the time you pick up your car, just use the fast lane and an on-demand opt-in will be added to your rental. Additional fees may apply. |
Is Rent A Toll a mandatory service?
Any Rent A Toll service is completely optional. If you agree to the service (Opt-In), the applicable charges are added to your rental receipt. If you do not agree to the service (Opt-Out) you are not charged for the service. However, if you drive on a toll road, you must stop to pay the toll in person and collect your receipt.
What if I don't Opt-In and run a toll booth?
If this happens, call your car rental agency and Opt-In to the Rent A Toll service before the end of your rental period. Your tolls will be paid and added to your rental receipt.
With this process, you avoid prosecution by the toll authority for a toll violation, and you minimize the potential for fines and fees.
I drove through a toll booth and got a red light. What does that mean?
If you Opted-In, you have nothing to worry about.
If you chose not to Opt-In, you may have violated the toll. As noted above, this action triggers on-demand services. In some markets, this action could lead to a collection action by the toll authority.
I’ve run toll booths for years and never received a notice. Why do I need Rent A Toll?
First, you are breaking the law which carries its own consequences.
Second, toll authorities, car rental agencies and their collection agencies are becoming much more aggressive about pursuing toll violators. Car rental agencies are held accountable by toll authorities so they are tracking customers down and requiring them to pay the tolls, maximum fines, and fees.
One U.S. city is aggressively pursuing car renter toll violations. If you violate in that city, your liability for a 40¢ toll could reach $120.40, as illustrated in the table below.
Depending upon the Rent A Toll service available, you are charged the cost of your tolls plus a small service fee – and you are done!
